Could Social Media Have Saved Whitney Houston?

Social Media for Good

Being a kid of the 80s, I was shocked this weekend when I learned of Whitney Houston’s death. I might add that I was not surprised. She had been troubled for a very long time.

Many years ago I lost a friend to Depression, and I thought a lot about both of these two people this weekend.

I’ve written before on the power of Social Media to promote and cause change. Protestors around the world have used Facebook and Twitter to organize and get out their message against corrupt political regimes and companies ignorant of their consumers’ beliefs and concerns.

Could we also use Social Media to save lives? Imagine if Whitney had a Twitter account or if a family member or her publicist. What if people had shown the outpouring of concern for her that they have in the last couple of days. Picture millions of people posting “Get help. We love you”.

Could it work?

I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one
I hope some day you’ll join us”
