How Mobile Marketing Professionals Can Benefit from Consumer Use of the Mobile Web.

Readers of this blog already know that I’m a huge proponent of mobile. The stats speak for themselves.

While Apple has not listened to my complaints ...

  • 58% of mobile users access the internet multiple times each day
  • 35% of smartphone owners expect to spend more time on their device in the future
  • 62% claim that they spent an average of six days online per week

For marketers, avoiding the opportunities that mobile offers are perilous at best. But, how can this group be approached?

Data shows that there are three top reasons that people use the internet on their smartphone.

  • Pass the time while waiting
  • To get information while away from their desktop
  • To provide relevant information

With this data in mind, brands should be found, be interesting, and be easy.

Be found

Obviously, if your site isn’t optimized using the most up-to-date SEO practices, none of this matters. You need to not only be found for your brand name, but also for all those non-brand terms that people use when doing research. Web users are notoriously short attention span visitors. Don’t make them search too hard for you, or they might find your competitors instead.

Be Interesting

Catch their attention with intriguing stats and images on your site. Cross post these to social media. Analyze your data to see what’s keeping searchers around the longest and use this to inform future content. Don’t ignore your analytics. It’s the only way you have of knowing wether your audience finds you interesting or has become disinterested in your brand.

Be Easy

It may seem obvious, but smaller screens require a different design focus than your massive desktop monitor. Don’t clutter the page with unneeded imagery, text or navigation. Once again, use your analytics data to find out what your users are looking for when they access your site using a mobile device. While responsive design makes this easy, you may need to create a mobile experience that is specific to your consumers’ needs.
