The Scoop on Twitter and Social Media Marketing

Twitter: Social Media Marketing for the Masses

In my never ending quest to stay on top of all the changes that happen in Social Media Marketing, I came across this great post by Jason Keath of Social Fresh!

He writes, ” … more than four in ten US adults hear or read about twitter every day.” Even though Twitter‘s actual user base is fairly small in comparison to Facebook, the network’s reach is large!

Since Facebook is a closed system, you have to be connected to the person to read what they are saying. Twitter on the other hand is open, unless the writer makes his account private. If one isn’t following, say @searchwookie, they can still see the person’s Tweets simply by doing a Twitter search for @searchwookie on Twitter or a search engine.

Twitter is also great for generating trial and awareness. A recent study by Constant Contact and research firm Chadwick Martin Bailey found that “60% of brand followers are more likely to recommend a brand to a friend after following the brand on Twitter, and 50% of brand followers are more likely to buy from that brand”.

Like other digital marketing channels, Twitter can also help support other efforts. The study found that Twitter users use Facebook more than users who stick solely to Facebook — 60% of Twitter users use Facebook more than three hours per week, compared with 49% of Facebook users overall. But what do these people want from you?

According to the study, Twitter users choose to follow brands for five distinct reasons:

  • 64%: I am a customer of the company
  • 61%: To be the first to know information about the brand
  • 48%: To receive discounts and promotions
  • 36%: To gain access to exclusive content
  • 28%: To receive content/information to retweet and share with others

Look at the top three. You definitely need to keep your customers happy, in the know, and provide them with some freebies.

This kind of success isn’t easy to acquire. Only 21% of Twitter users follow brands on Twitter, and of those, 79% follow fewer than 10 brands. You need to have a strategy for using this channel as well as success metrics and goals in place to evaluate your efforts.

Your brand’s Social Media Marketing can explode across multiple social networks, screens, and media using Twitter.
