Think SEO Is Dead? Think Again.

Every  couple of years, I read about the supposed death of SEO and Search in general. With the rise of Social Media, there were times when it really seemed like it could happen.

For example, back in 2010, ComScore pointed out that users spend way more time on Facebook than they do on Google.

It all makes perfect sense when you think it through. People go to Facebook for a variety of reasons. People go to Facebook to talk with their friends, look at pictures of their friends, watch videos of their friends, etc. People go to Google for one reason alone – to look for answers to questions. Many of these questions have a monetary transaction at heart, whether they are researching or buying or comparing. If you look at market share, Google seems to provide answers to these questions fairly well. For the time being, neither Google nor Facebook rules the roost. Facebook doesn’t have a true search component, though there are rumors, and unfortunately for Google, the search giant hasn’t figured out Social Media.

People spend more time on MySpace than they do on Google+.

But we have to face the facts, as exhibited in the infographic below from Statista. Sure we want to socialize and look at party pictures, but each new day begets a new set of questions. There is no end in sight for all the questions one can come up with in a 24 hour period. Also, Google’s Search reputation rests on bringing you the best answers, which is why they tell you how to SEO your own site. For these two reasons alone, Search and SEO Marketers will always have a seat at the internet table.
