Get ready for the deluge of Tweets, status updates, emails, etc. Instagram was acquired by Facebook (isn’t that every app developers dream?), and will now have ads. 
Believe me I understand your pain. I have lived through innumerable indie bands that “sold out” and became loved by everyone. Oftentimes that’s the lifespan of things that are good. We discover them. The world discovers them. They aren’t cool anymore.
The other problem here is that us early adopters of instagram feel put upon to have to deal with ads. Let’s put this into perspective. Remember that really cool party-house in college? Maybe it was yours. They had the music, the sound system, the busted up couches, and most importantly the kegs of beer. Someone had to pay rent on that house. Someone had to pay the electric bill. Showing up on a weekend night for a party, we didn’t have to pitch in for any of that. But we had no problem paying for the beer, and often drinking it out of branded cups.
That’s all that happening here. Instagram throws a great party. Ads pay for the beer. In this instance, the ads pay for the hefty price of servers and the people that make their living off of keeping those servers happy and healthy. The ads pay for developers and designers to pay their bills among other things. And yes, the ads probably put a hefty chunk of change in the pockets of Facebook and instagram. But hey, isn’t the definition of business to make money?
